After pulling over to the side, the man began, \u201cOfficer, I can explain\u2026\u201d \u201cQuiet!\u201d replied the police officer hastily, \u201cI\u2019m taking you in for speeding within residential limits\u201d. The man protested, \u201cBut officer, please listen! I\u2026\u201d The officer was in no mood to listen. \u201cI asked you to keep quiet! So he\u2019ll be pleasant to you when he gets back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To this, the man replied, \u201cDon\u2019t count on it. I tried to tell you \u2013 I am the groom\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This humorous story helps to drive home the importance of\u00a0<strong>listening skills\u00a0<\/strong>in effective\u00a0<strong>communication.\u00a0<\/strong>Listening to the other person while he\/she speaks can avoid communication gaps and consequently, any problems that may arise out of it. If the officer would have listened to the offending motorist\u2019s explanation before taking him in, he would have been able to avoid a lot of problems for everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hence it is important for us to improve our<strong>\u00a0listening skills.\u00a0<\/strong>Listening is a step above hearing. This is when you not just simply hear with your ears what the other person says; it is when you assimilate the idea or thought that is being conveyed and internalize it. With practice, you can effectively improve your listening abilities.
